Sonja joined Emilio Bisceglia and Fernando Souza at Bisceglia & Associates in 2002 after articling and practicing at a downtown boutique firm for the first few years of her career.

Sonja’s practice focuses primarily on civil litigation, including both plaintiff and defendant work, advocating on behalf of clients on issues of all levels of complexity in a wide range of industries.  In this capacity, Sonja appears regularly before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, for corporations, businesses, and individuals.  She also regularly appears before the Ontario Court of Justice – Provincial Offences on various municipal offence matters. Sonja has appeared before the Divisional Court of Ontario and, as co-counsel, before the Court of Appeal of Ontario.  She has also appeared before the Landlord and Tenant Board of Ontario and various other administrative boards and tribunals throughout her legal career.

Sonja strongly believes in a person’s right to be heard and to feel that they have been heard.  That does not begin in a courtroom; but, rather, it begins with the first contact a client makes to retain Sonja as legal counsel. Sonja listens to her clients intently and ensures that they are afforded every opportunity to communicate the facts in issue and their frustration and stress over them. After listening, Sonja asks the question, “What do you want to achieve?” And then, she listens even more closely; because she believes that being a lawyer is not just about “winning”, it is about understanding, advising, and guiding so that, together with the client, she secures an outcome that best aligns with the client’s needs and goals.

In her practice, Sonja values the importance of not only keeping a client informed of the process at all times; but, also, of assessing and evaluating the client’s needs, goals, and risks at every stage of the litigation - appreciating that those may change over time. She remains keenly aware of the cost, stress, and risk of litigation for a client - be it a large corporation, a midsize business, or an individual who has never litigated before. When she advises a client, Sonja’s advice is boldly honest and realistic. Sonja believes that justice does not always require litigation but it does always require fairness and respect.
